Some of the islands finest examples of Machair land, the grassy plains that provide a fertile habitat for the innumerable species of rare birds and flora.

Linked to Benbecula by causeway, with a road running from north to south through the townships; the spectacular Isle of South Uist's west side is virtually all Machair land, while the east side is very rocky and backed by a stunning range of hills, the highest being Beinn Mhor (620m).

There are many guided walks along the interesting sites on the island. Askernish Golf Course is well used by visitors and locals. Here golfers can enjoy their games against a stunning Machair landscape.

In South Uist there are many points of local history and much of this can be discovered at the Kildonan Museum, where the South Uist Historical Society house many exhibits that reflect the islands in times past.  There is also a modern café and craft shop on the premises.

Lochboisdale is the main township, where you can catch a ferry to or from Oban on the mainland, on most days going via the beautiful island of Barra, further south.
