Causeway leading to the Island of Berneray

Berneray lies to the west of the Sound of Harris and is now connected to North Uist by a causeway.

It is very much a crofting, knitting and lobster fishing community and has a lot of machair land and sand dunes.

A favourite holiday spot of HRH the Prince of Wales, the island is approximately 3 miles long and 1½ miles wide.

The population mainly reside on the eastern side of the island, numbering about 140.

Unusually, the island does not have peat but is green and fertile with outstanding beaches.

Along with the new community centre, there is a post office, shop and a minibus service.
