Before the causeways were built it was possible at low tides to cross
from one island to the other, although this was a most dangerous
endeavour even for the most experienced islander.
Along with Grimsay, Benbecula forms one of the main
stepping-stones between the islands.
The flattest island of the Uist group, Benbecula's
main township is Balivanich. The island is the hub of the
local community, where many key organisations are centrally
located including the local council and health board offices,
Western Isles Enterprise, RAF Benbecula and DERA Royal Artillery
Range Hebrides.

Benbecula Airport links the islands to both the mainland (Glasgow) and
other islands of the Western Isles (Lewis and Barra).
To the east of the island there is an abundance
of fresh water lochs suitable for fishing, while the west
side boasts an abundance of vibrant Machair land, with breathtakingly
long beaches ideal for peaceful walks. To the south one will
find the well-equipped Lionacleit community school.
The school houses a museum, theatre, library, café
and swimming pool, all for public use.
